Fixtures will be confirmed after the draw, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the round of 16. The third-placed sides in each group transfer to the Europa League knockout round play-offs, where they will face the Europa League group runners-up for places in the last 16.City have the benefit of being in Pot 1, but could still find themselves up against Real Madrid in the group stage. Their hardest possible draw could also see them play AC Milan and Galatasaray.
Arsenal and Man Utd are both in Pot 2, meaning they each will play one of Sevilla, Barcelona, Napoli, Bayern, PSG, Benfica or Feyenoord. Of those, Dutch champions Feyenoord would certainly be the kindest draw, while Bayern, Barcelona and PSG would be the key teams to avoid. Newcastle could be handed a nightmare draw of Bayern, Real Madrid and AC Milan, though their fans would relish such trips after a long time out of the Champions League.
Celtic could face any of the English sides except Newcastle, as they are both in Pot 4. They also face a difficult task to emerge from the groups.
