The 1922 committee’s Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said that a leadership challenge has ‘got to be on the cards’ in 2022 if Mr Johnson does not change the way he works with his MPs. Conservative Prime Ministers have often been forced from office by their backbenchers, with Margaret Thatcher and arguably Theresa May being notable examples.
