Samsung has a message it wants to make sure you hear: The consumer tech industry has been screwing up the planet for a long time, and it's dedicated to reversing the damage. Coming from one of the leading global manufacturers of semi-disposable mobile devices stuffed with plastics, batteries, alloys, and rare earth components, such a statement feels like stale lip service.

Right at the top of its hour-long press conference, Samsung committed increasing its sustainability efforts across all of its products this year. More recycled materials will show up in Galaxy products, its home appliances will get more energy efficient, and users of its SmartThings platform will get new ways to automatically adjust the settings of their connected appliances to save energy and shrink their carbon footprint.

The company didn't offer any hard strategies or quantify many of those goals, but it did make a product announcement that we can actually measure. Samsung has developed a new wash cycle and filter for its washing machines to reduce the amount of microplastics that shed from your laundry into the wastewater by a claimed 54 percent. This new innovation is in Samsung's Bespoke washers in Europe. It will be coming to washers in Korea next month, and US machines "soon.
