The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission litigated the case alongside the Attorney General’s office and approved the settlement on Wednesday.

The woman sent the original complaint to the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General in May 2020, claiming landlord John and Bonnie Gruver revoked her lease just before the move-in date because of concerns that her grandchild was in legal trouble and the fact that she is Black. She said when she tried to explain that her grandchild would not be living with her, the landlord would not listen.
The AG’s office argued when the landlord revoked the woman’s lease that it was a violation of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. The office also claimed that the real estate firm aided and abetted the violation “because its agent knew or should have known that the landlords’ reasons for voiding the complainant’s valid lease were racially discriminatory, yet the agent took actions to facilitate and enforce the decision rather than oppose it.
