In addition to murdering a local business owner, investigators said the 24-year-old set a local apartment building on fire and endangered 11 people, including children.

Javen T. Jackson was sentenced Dec. 20 to life in prison plus 4–10 years on second-degree murder and arson charges, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office said.

At trial, prosecutors said the apartment building residents described grabbing their children and making a run for their lives. Court documents said a third person eventually entered the truck from the passenger side and put the truck into park and took the keys to stop Jackson from taking it. By that point, Blackwell was having trouble breathing and was “turning blue,” an affidavit of probable cause said.

The affidavit said Jackson admitted to stealing the truck during an interview with police, but claimed he tried to tell Blackwell he was only going to borrow it.
