CenterPoint ratepayers could see their natural gas bills increase beginning May 2 to offset the utility provider’s costs of reinforcing its natural gas infrastructure after the February 2021 freeze.
The increase applies to the base fee that all customers pay regardless of how much natural gas they use. A residential customer who pays $18.38 a month would see that charge increase by $1.36 or about 7 percent to $19.74 per month under the proposal. The rate increase is unrelated to the spiking prices of natural gas on the wholesale market, which surged to a 14-year high this month to $5.15 per million British thermal units due largely to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions.
The $19.3 million that will be raised from the higher rate will pay for costs CenterPoint incurred in 2021, said Alejandra Diaz, a spokeswoman for the company. Texas statutes allow utility companies to submit Gas Reliability Infrastructure Program filings, allowing them to temporarily raise their rates without needing to file approval to raise rates altogether.
Among the costs CenterPoint will use the rate hike to cover were the replacement of 276 miles of natural gas pipelines, the installation of new meters that automatically shut off if excessive gas flows are detected, and two facilities that can supplement natural gas supplies during periods of peak demand.
