Michael Castaneda excels on the mound and offensively to lead Valley Christian past Hollister in the CCS Division I final.
SAN JOSE — It never gets old for Valley Christian.
The San Jose school captured its 11th CCS championship, blanking red-hot Hollister 5-0 at Excite Ballpark behind more brilliance from senior Michael Castaneda, who pitched 6 1/3 innings and drove in two runs to lead the way. Valley Christian pitcher Michael Castaneda pitches against Hollister in the first inning of their Central Coast Section Division I championship game at Excite Ballpark in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday, May 27, 2023. Valley Christian defeated Hollister 5-0. He retired six in a row to start the game and did not give up a hit until Brayon Chavez singled to center to put runners on first and second with one out in the fourth.
Quinten Marsh’s single to right in the fifth extended the margin to four runs and Valley added another run in the sixth to put the score out of reach. “We knew they were a tough team. We knew they were shifty. We knew they were going to pull all the tricks out in the book to beat us today. I just felt that if I played my game and trusted my D behind me and trusted the team that we were going to be able to put up five runs, that was more than we needed.
