Forensic examiners have not yet determined how a Waller County constable deputy found inside his car in northwest Harris County died, according to the Harris County medical examiner’s office.
Sgt. Frederick Portis’ cause and manner of death as of Thursday were listed as pending, according to the Harris County medical examiner’s website. His age is not listed on the page.
A motorist called Harris County sheriff’s deputies around 7:30 p.m. Thursday from the 12400 block of West Little York Road to report an unmarked vehicle with the lights on,Waller County Precinct 3 Constable Herschel Smith said Portis had talked with another officer as recently as 2:15 p.m. and he’d seemed fine. The officer tried to call him back around 2:30 p.m. and he didn’t respond.
But Portis had been at a meeting the night before and been in good spirits, Smith said. Portis was found inside the passenger side of the vehicle, Smith said.
