Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title Sunday, defeating Casper Ruud in four sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 , 6-3 to capture the 2022 US Open. With the victory, the 19-year-old will be ranked as the new world No. 1 on Monday, becoming the youngest to do so. Sunday marked the first Grand Slam men’s singles final featuring two players competing for the No. 1 ranking.
“It’s something that I dreamed of as a little kid,” Alcaraz said after the match. “It’s something that I worked really hard [for]. It’s tough to talk right now.” Alcaraz took the opening set of the final 6-4. But Ruud responded, raising his game to win the second set 6-2. In the third set, after Alcaraz got out to an early break 2-1, Ruud broke back to go on serve 2-2. At 6-5, Ruud had three set point opportunities to go up two sets to one. Alcaraz saved all three, holding serve to force a third-set tiebreaker. For the first time at this year’s US Open, Alcaraz won a tiebreaker, taking it 7-1 over Ruud.
Up 3-2 in the fourth set, Alcaraz got a critical break of serve after Ruud’s forehand sailed long. The Spaniard never looked back. After going up 5-3, he held serve to clinch the title.
