The car was brought to a standstill by the use of a stinger
Police used a stinger to bring a vehicle to a standstill that failed to stop after being pursued by officers in the Preston area in the early hours of this morning . Lancashire Constabulary's road police employed the stinger, which punctures one or more tyres of a vehicle when laid out across the road, after the driver had been reported by a member of the public allegedly for driving erratically.
Officers located the vehicle and gave chase when it failed to stop. However, it was brought to a halt when the stinger was employed on Golden Way and the car was unable to continue. The driver was given a breath test at the roadside and registered 45 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath against the legal limit of 35. The driver was taken to the police station, where the breath test there showed a higher reading of 63.Lancashire Police said on Twitter: "The driver of this vehicle was sighted driving erratically by a member of the public in the Preston area. #HO30 located the vehicle before it failed to stop. Vehicle stung by #HO31 on Golden Way.
The stinger is a hollow spike tyre deflation device that works by puncturing one or more tyres of an oncoming vehicle when it is thrown into the path of the vehicle by an officer from the side of the road. The stinger is then quickly retracted to permit a following police car to pass by.
