Canada and the Netherlands take Syrian regime to the International Court of Justice over allegations of torture, the tribunal says, in the first case at the UN's top court over the regime's brutal civil war

Canada and the Netherlands alleged in their application to the ICJ, which rules on disputes between UN member states, that "Syria has committed countless violations of international law, beginning at least in 2011." / Photo: Reuters Archive

The Hague-based ICJ said on Monday that the Dutch and Canadians accused Syria of breaching a UN convention against"torture or other cruel treatment", including the"use of chemical weapons". "Canada and the Kingdom of the Netherlands filed a joint application instituting proceedings against the Syrian Arab Republic before the International Court of Justice ," the court said in a statement.
