More than 11,300 people had signed the No to Nottingham Cuts petition

Terrified campaigners have questioned 'what will be left of our city' if vital services are slashed by cash-strapped Nottingham City Council. More than 11,300 people have signed the No to Nottingham Cuts petition, which has railed against the drastic cuts planned to the council's services after it declared bankruptcy on November 29, 2023.

"Democracy is a key concern, we can all see the process has not been as open as it should be up to this point. It is a travesty to see unelected government commissioners come in and have so much control over how our city is run - we really want to make sure locals are heard. "The government has sought to put more and more of the burden for rising costs from changing demographics, inflation and social care on local councils - while taking away investment with the other hand," Mr Pickering said. "We shouldn't be expected to roll over and sell our own assets to find a sticking plaster solution for what is clearly a fundamentally broken model."

Groups like Shifting Your Mindset, which helps families and underserved communities, would see their funding reduced as part of the plans to address the city council's budget shortfall. Mutsa Makaka, the founder of the charity which currently feeds around 200 people a week, believed the cutback on spending would lead to a "vicious cycle" of decline in the city.
