They want action
Campaigners are demanding that the grounds of Nottingham Castle are re-opened to the public, following the closure last week after the trust running the site went into liquidation. On Saturday, December 3, a groups of campaigners will be posting their demands on the castle gates at 2pm.
The former chief executive, Sara Blair-Manning, left in August 2021 and took the trust to an employment tribunal, believing she was unfairly dismissed. A letter of no confidence was also sent to the trust board, and there were also allegations of hate incidents taking place within the castle grounds.Since then the castle has closed and there has been no indication of when it will open again.
"Those questions will inevitably take time to work out. While that's happening why should local residents be prevented from accessing this iconic piece of green space in the city centre." Retired library worker Chris Cook Cann added: "Clearly privatising the space and trying to run it for profit hasn't worked. Instead, it seems to have lost the city millions of pounds.
Following the closure of the castle last week, Nottingham City Council's portfolio holder for leisure, culture and planning, Councillor Pavlos Kotsonis, said: "We will reopen the castle as soon as possible. Once we have a clearer picture from the liquidators, we will explore all available options together with our key partners the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England and others to develop a fresh business model.
