THE UNIVERSITY of Cambridge will return over 100 looted Benin Bronzes back to Nigeria. The Charity Commission agreed the university was “under a moral obligation” to return the items back to Nigeria.
“The university is now working with the commission to finalise next steps regarding these Benin bronzes, and we will communicate these in due course.” The university said some of the objects will remain Cambridge “on extended loan” for the purpose of teaching schools and the public about west African history and civilisation.
The latest repatriation of looted African artefacts is expected to put pressure on other institutions like the British Museum, who refuse to return its collection of stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria. they plan to only “lend” their collection of pillaged Benin Bronzes, but have no plans to give them up.It has approximately 300 historic photographs associated with the Benin Kingdom in its possession.
