The latest polls show California Governor Gavin Newsom is likely to keep his job as President Biden pledges to join his in the final stretch of the recall election campaign. Follow Newsweek's liveblog for all the latest.

COVID-19 has been the dominant issue in government and politics, particularly in California, over the past year. Often being the first to introduce, and keep, tough virus measures, Democrats in the state have come under fire and the policies have been a source of intense debate.

Other issues include the 160,000 rough sleepers in the state, soaring house prices, and the increasingly severe droughts caused by climate change.
