The California Legislature has voted to increase how much money people can win in medical malpractice lawsuits

California lawmakers approved a bill, Thursday, May, 12, 2022, that would increase the amount of money people in California could receive who get hurt because of a doctor's negligence. SACRAMENTO, Calif.
Those amounts will gradually increase over the next decade until they reach $750,000 for injured patients and $1 million for families of deceased patients. After that, the caps will increase 2% every year to keep up with inflation. California does not limit how much money patients can win in malpractice lawsuits for things that can be calculated, like medical expenses and lost wages.
Advocates have tried for years to increase the caps, including a 2014 effort rejected by 66% of the vote.
