In 2016, the Perception Institute released a study finding a real and quantifiable bias against black persons wearing natural hair. New California laws aim to change that.

S.B. 188 now heads to California Governor Gavin Newsom's desk where he is expected to sign it.

In February, New York City's Commission on Human Rights added protections for hairstyle to anti-discrimination ordinances in the workplace and at school. As it pertains to employment, the survey found that one in five black women felt a distinct pressure to straighten their hair for work, twice the proportion of white women who felt a similar pressure.
