How to Work Under a First-Time ManagerHow to Work Under a First-Time ManagerNobody is born with the skills of a great leader. Good managers are built over the course of many years through learning, experience, and mentorship. But every boss must start somewhere — with their first direct report. Here are a few types of first-time managers you may encounter, and ways to make the most of your working relationship with them. The Hands-off Boss. They may lack the skills to provide direct feedback, address confrontation, or delegate tasks. Or, they might just be unaware of how much guidance you like to work under. Ask them if you can schedule a weekly one-on-one meeting and come prepared with a structured agenda each week to make sure you’re on the same page about your tasks and progress. The Distracted Boss. A newly promoted people leader will have a new role to learn, maybe several new direct reports to balance, and potentially their own new manager to impress. You likely won’t be their only, or first, priority. That’s why it can also be helpful to have other mentors, sponsors, or coaches inside your organization. Check with your manager or ask the HR department if there is a mentorship or coaching program you can get involved in. The Overbearing Boss. Anyone who gets a promotion is likely eager to prove that they have what it takes to succeed in their new role. The same can be said of newly promoted managers. But when their desire to hit the ground running turns into micromanaging, no one wins. When your boss assigns you a new project or task, clarify ownership, establish touch points, and align on what success looks like. The Friendly Boss. Having a manager who treats you more like a friend than a direct report seems like an advantage. But balancing the friend/boss dynamic can become challenging and confusing. If you’re ever put into an uncomfortable situation, call out the discomfort, work to establish new boundaries with your boss, and ask them for honesty in your working relationship.
