“We realized we needed more space, but also needed a space where people could shop and get what they want. It’s worked out wonderfully here,” John Patten, vice president of the board of directors, said.For in-school distribution, the food bank network provides children enrolled in the National School Lunch Program with additional meals and snacks to take home for the weekend. The program continues during summer breaks and currently serves some 800 elementary age children.
“It troubled me from the start that clients had to stand outside in the elements,” Katz said. “I wanted an enclosure to protect them.” Chris Yen, a retired cost engineer in construction industry, said volunteering is a means of “paying it forward.”
