Ayo Dosunmu has embraced the challenge of being the Bulls starting point guard with the same fearlessness hes displayed throughout his rookie season.
It’s high praise, but, like everything in his life, Dosunmu has earned it. Since moving to the starting lineup amid a wash of injuries nine games ago, he has brought his relentlessly dogged defensive style for a whopping 37.6 minutes per contest, and firmly cemented himself as the Bulls’ top option to replace starting point guard, who will miss at least the next six-to-eight weeks after undergoing knee surgery last Friday.
“That role of being a point guard, it's not about just worrying about myself and getting shots off,” Dosunmu said, referencing the Bulls’ recent win over the Portland Trail Blazers. “Of course, there'll be games where I will need to be aggressive on the basis of teams who want to take out Zach , DeMar and Vooch . But [against Portland] I just thought that the best way for us to win was me getting the other guys easier shots, putting them in position to be successful.
“The rookie wall, to me with a lot of these guys, it's not physical, it's mental,” Donovan said. “Because of the recovery, the ability with physical therapists, strength coaches, you can help them get their bodies back. It's the mental fatigue of game after game after game, all condensed in a pretty tight period.”
