Born in the tiny South American country of Guyana, he moved to New York City with his family when he was 10. But some kids in his new neighborhood in Queens, didn’t take too kindly to the newcomer.

But instead of plying his skills exclusively for personal gain, Jabbar tapped into the isolation he felt as a boy to feed a budding concept: Help members of groups that are underrepresented in the tech industry find good jobs. Jabbar recognizes that while educational institutions and the tech industry are making inroads to address the disparity, more can be done to give people from these groups the tools they need to succeed.

He’s also fond of the S Pen, the detachable keyboard, the Super AMOLED display and how quickly the device charges. He was also astounded to find that he could code and do dev work through DeX, a Samsung platform that creates a desktop PC experience on mobile devices. Students come into the three-month academy with jobs as bartenders, janitors and other lower-paying roles. When they get out, they land technical positions with salaries that can start at $60,000, an economic advance that catapults them into the middle class. So far, 73 percent of graduates have secured employment in this kind of work.

The organization also exposed her to the specialized field of ad tech, which uses digital technology in the advertising space. She landed a job at a wedding advertisement network, where she works on analytics and customer relationship management. Now she’s thinking of going back to school to get an MBA so she can help launch startups.
