Blues icon Buddy Guy returned to Jacobs Pavilion for a evening of blues and soul.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Buddy Guy turned 87 on tour. It’s his final world tour, hence the title “Damn Right, Farewell Tour.”
Guy and his quartet opened with the title track from his Grammy-winning 1991 comeback record “Damn Right, I Got The Blues,” featuring a volcanic electric piano solo that was one of the few nods to his records. Guy and the band then settled into one of the most familiar riffs in the blues language, Muddy Waters’ “Hootchie Cootchie Man,” with the crowd in the bleachers stomping out the “Ba-dump-a-ba-dump,” rhythm.
Now, Guy can still whip out a few of his less physically demanding guitar tricks such as playing Cream’s famous “Sunshine Of Your Love” riff with drumsticks and towels and a little playing with his teeth during a snippet of Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child ” But he still has that warm stage demeanor and playfully wicked smile and a salty tongue.
Guy talked of how Mick Jagger insisted Waters be a guest with the Stones on the old music variety TV show “Shindig” , bringing attention to the music Guy and his peers and heroes were already playing on the chitlin’ circuit. Second opener Jimmy Vaughn and his veteran band including a three-man horn section, played a set of familiar blues shuffles, riffs and 12 bar dirges. While never the fire-breathing ax slinger his younger brother Stevie Ray became, the former Fabulous Thunderbirds’ sharp Stratocaster tone was there and Vaughan played and sang a soulful version of Texas Flood, Slim Harpo’s “Scratch My Back” and a shufflin’ “Baby Please Come Home” with his tasteful guitar work.
