“I wasn’t going to let it eat at me, no matter how s***ty some of the things were that my family had to endure,” Bryan Harsin told ESPN's Clowespn. “There were things we didn’t like. There were things that were disappointing, on and off the field.' More:
Bryan Harsin has been mostly silent since being fired as Auburn’s head football coach last October, but he did finally resurface in a public sense this week.for a story published online Thursday, his first interview since he was let go by the Tigers. In the interview, he said he and his family are “thriving” despite enduring a mid-year firing in his second season and a 2021-22 offseason that saw Auburn conduct an internal investigation into the possibility of ousting him after just one year.
One of the major criticisms of Harsin had to do with poor recruiting, something that has only been magnified by the roster overhaul new Auburn coach Hugh Freeze has undertaken since he was hired by the school in December. Harsin said his being hired in the midst of the COVID pandemic only exacerbated a lack of familiarity he and his staff of largely career West Coast coaches had with recruiting in the Southeast.
The 46-year-old Harsin is 85-36 in 10 seasons as a head coach, and had never had a losing season before coming to Auburn. He called his tenure with the Tigers his “first real failure in a lot of ways.” “But when you really get tested as we were at Auburn, and it’s the same challenge for your players, your true colors are going to show in how you handle it. Certainly, there are things we could have done better and things we would have done differently if you could go back.”
