Despite Bryan Cranston getting backlash for The Upside, a sequel is in the works.
The Upside is getting a sequel despite receiving casting backlash. The film – which is a remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables based on the real-life figures Abdel Sallou and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo – was released in theaters in January 2019 after a 2017 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
I was pretty surprised that I got some blowback to it, and I thought, "There’s a good point, that disabled actors are not given an opportunity." It’s a kind of a catch-22 that… it’s like, "Do you have the cache to be able to carry a film?" [However,] you can only have the perspective of a 66-year-old white male… you can understand but you cannot really know what it feels like to live in that skin."The Upside Backlash Explained The backlash to The Upside in 2019 is in keeping with recent advocacy throughout Hollywood.
