Cleveland gambled on Watson mainly because of his passing, but his running can punish unsuspecting defenses when everything else is covered.
The left side of the field, if Amari Cooper could block his defender, was going to be wide open. The Browns didn’t know who in the middle of Cincinnati’s defense was blitzing and who was dropping, but it didn’t really matter. They had the numbers to match. The real key wasIt was a gutsy time to check into the run. The Browns burned their final timeout of the half the play before and faced a second-and-10 from the 13 with 22 seconds left while holding a slim 3-0 lead.
It’s asking an awful lot of the right guard and it’s a block Teller may not have reached last year. When he’s healthy, Teller is one of the best run-blocking and pulling guards in the NFL. But multiple calf and ankle injuries last year limited his mobility in what was his worst year in Cleveland. He’s healthy now, which was evident by the key block he threw in springing Watson.
Watson’s aDot in the first half Sunday was more than 12 yards per attempt. It’s a number that measures how far down the field the ball travels through the air. That’s a far greater number than any of his six starts last year and proves the Browns are trying to become a big-play offense that drives the ball down the field with chunk plays like so many other elite teams across the league. All of that has been foreign for years to the home sideline inside Cleveland Browns Stadium.
