Sami knows of other students who were evacuated during the conflict and are also unable to continue study.The Student Loans Company confirmed that Sami was not eligible for funding due to the gap for British nationals fleeing Sudan, and said their hands were tied by Government policy.
A spokesperson for SLC said: “Eligibility criteria for student finance is determined by the UK government. SLC’s role is to process applications in line with such criterial. UK nationals must have three years residency in the UK prior to the start of their course to be eligible to receive student finance.”
A Government source said that the three-year UK residency rule for home fees is in place to ensure that taxpayer funds are only loaned to those with strong connections to the UK. and made a “perilous journey” to the evacuation site, being stopped and searched 25 times by the warring militia groups.flown to Cyprus on a military aircraft and then to the UK on a commercial jet.
