Based on a true story, the 2022 movie Breaking, stars Attack the Block 2 actor John Boyega as Brian Brown-Easley. In the thriller drama, Brown-Easley is a Marine Corps veteran who threatens to rob a bank. However, Brown-Easley isn't after a large sum of money; he instead wants to negotiate so that he receives his monthly check from the Department of Veterans Affairs. In the standoff between Brown-Easley and police officers, Brown-Easley is killed.
Brian Brown-Easley Was A Former US Marine Veteran While a member of the Marines, Brown-Easley served in Kuwait and Iraq. When he was initially discharged in 2005, the veteran began living with his mother, Barbara Easley. He then met Jessica Tate in Georgia and the two married and had a daughter, Jayla. Brown-Easley had also been experiencing mental health issues and back pain as a result of his time in the Marines before he was honorably discharged.
2017 Wells Fargo Bank Robbery Attempt On July 7, 2017, Brown-Easley entered a Wells Fargo bank and threatened that he had a bomb, keeping two bank employees as hostages while letting others exit. During the hostage situation, Brown-Easley called 911 and a news station called WSB-TV. He explained that he did not want the bank's money, only his $892 check from the VA so he would not have to live on the street.
While negotiations took place, a SWAT team of snipers surrounded the bank. Even though it was determined negotiations with Brown-Easley would play out peacefully, Officer Dennis Ponte, who was part of the tactical team, made the decision to shoot Brown-Easley, killing him. Despite the fact the SWAT team was not given orders to shoot Brown-Easley, it was ruled that the officer did not break the law in shooting the veteran.
