Seven months ago, Nissan wasn’t feeling too bullish about Brexit. Today, despite the enduring threat of no-deal, the Japanese firm is sounding a lot more positive.

It’s something of a shock that Sunderland’s 7,000 staff are to be shielded from cuts. Time and again we’ve heard that Brexit will be a death knell for British carmakers, as duties and border checks render complex cross-continent supplies chains unviable.

So what gives? The answer surely lies with the strength of the Sunderland plant, which is lauded for its high productivity and access to skilled labor. Nissan’s other European operations just don’t seem to stack up—not least its factory in Barcelona, which executives this week announced would close.

Putting this together, it appears that Nissan values production prowess over seamless supply chains. And there are bigger forces at play than Brexit. Though commitments have been made to its UK operation, Nissan freely admits that Europe is no longer a priority, listing Japan, North America, and China as its new"core" markets. This is a reflection, perhaps, of its corporate alliance with Renault, a French firm which plans to consolidate its grip on the continent while Nissan focuses elsewhere.
