Opening the conversation at Chelsea Piers, McGrath quantified part of venture capital’s diversity problem: Less than 3% of $100 billion in venture funding given to entrepreneurs last year went to women, and 0.2% of that went to black female founders. This year alone, Hamilton says, more women have approached her asking to invest than ever before—a sign of change that coincides with recent strides from underrepresented entrepreneurs.
