Beer columnist's first trip to the Mexican capital yields palate-pleasing results

When I knew him, Chester Green was a solitary and frugal man. A Tennessee native and WWI veteran who idolized Andrew Jackson, my grandfather lived alone in a cabin above the American River, in the town of Coloma.

Returning home, he’d stop overnight at my parents’ Encinitas home, regaling them — and their bored offspring — with endless tales of Mexico’s capital. The parks! The museums! The food! The señoritas! —unappreciated detours from my regular entertainment diet of comic books and Captain Kangaroo. Accompanied by a Spanish-speaking son, I flew down last month for the Padres-Giants series in Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu. The city, I was astonished to find, is beautiful, overflowing with lush gardens, charming parks and tree-shaded residential areas.
