For Variety VIP+ subscribers: Google’s new FAST move isn’t exactly new, but it will inform strategy on YouTube’s upcoming FAST service
For starters, don’t think this is Google launching a FAST service. As the software powering both the Chromecast streaming device as well as the smart TV user interface for several major TV set manufacturers, Google TV has previously included channels from Pluto TV in its live TV section , along with virtual MVPD channels from YouTube TV and Sling TV.
What this does mean is that Google TV is increasing the number of channels available within its central interface. Pluto TV has north of 350 channels; with the addition of the other three services, it will be possible to see over 800 channels in the channel interface . of an Alphabet-owned FAST service on YouTube in 2023.
It is worth noting that several FAST services are owned by companies with their own CTV aspirations, which would mean that Freevee , LG Channels+, Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, Vizio WatchFree+ and Xumo Play would likely not be willing partners. Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex are the largest of the available FAST services to pick from, with Haystack News a specialty news service.
News, particularly local news, will be a focus of Google TV’s engorged channel list. Tubi has an enormous 106 local channels available within its offering. And while there will be some channel crossover between the services, Pluto TV also offers major CBS local markets. National and local news are key draws for FAST engagement, particularly among those without pay TV who otherwise may lack access to local stations. Key to Google TV’s success in this arena will be to adopt the functionality Samsung TV Plus, STIRR and Local Now offer with auto-assigning the station closest to the viewer as the one that appears in the programming guide.
