In the Vastaamo case, one victim said the hacker gave her 24 hours to pay around 200 euros in bitcoin, or her therapy records would be posted. Tiina Parikka, a leadership development trainer who lives outside Helsinki, said she had panic attacks, stayed home from work for two weeks and called a crisis helpline in the aftermath of the extortion attempt.Two-and-a-half years after the cyberattack, Finnish law enforcement is now in the final stages of its criminal investigation.

The case will be a test of Finland’s legal system, investigators say, because of the volume of police reports and number of victims. Fifteen prosecutors will go through technical evidence and statements from around 24,000 patients whose data was exposed and some of which was published online, Finnish officials said. In all, 33,000 patients were affected.
