Super Bowl XL Most Valuable Player Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers kisses the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the team's 21-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Detroit on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006. As Hines Ward tracked down a 43-yard touchdown pass from Antwaan Randle El and skipped into the end zone for the final score of Super Bowl XL in 2006, 11-year-old Ryan Lewis watched from the crowd.
“We did, unfortunately, take that L to them in the Super Bowl,” Lewis said. “He was the MVP of that game, and he put on a great show.” “He still says, ‘Oh, the refs cheated us,’” Ward said. “It’s kind of crazy. Like, man, it’s been that long. But I told him I'm not giving him my Super Bowl ring. We won it. Regardless of whatever he says, we won it. That’s something I’m always going to cherish for the rest of my life is winning that Super Bowl and being named Super Bowl MVP.”
“We didn’t want to be the guy to let him down. That’s what I'm trying to create in my own organization,” Ward said. “Maybe we don’t have a Jerome, but we have an understanding of each other, and we’re playing with each other. The times that I won the Super Bowl, we were close. We didn’t have the best talent, but we were so close. To me, when you’re that close, will overcome some of the things you lack.
“Let’s be honest, you’re pulling 51 guys together from all over. They don’t know each other, and then you try to cram everybody in and think you’re supposed to be a family,” Ward said. “What's the fastest way to be a family? It’s understanding who you’re working with.”
