Braces from Santiago Patino, Sam Adeniran lift San Antonio FC to dominant win
Atlanta United 2 plays San Antonio FC during a USL Championship soccer match on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Toyota Field in San Antonio. San Antonio FC’s Santiago Patino admitted that the chance for a hat trick was on his mind when he subbed off at halftime.
Patino and Adeniran on Saturday became the first pair of San Antonio teammates in club history to score two goals in the same match, spurring a 5-0 win against Atlanta United 2 at Toyota Field. SAFC scored three goals in the opening half for just the second time this year, quickly putting away young, overmatched Atlanta .
The braces were just the second and third of the year for San Antonio. Justin Dhillon, who capped the scoring Saturday with an 88th-minute strike, provided SAFC’s only other multiple-goal effort when he scored twice in a 3-2 win against Rio Grande Valley on May 28. But Patino missed 11 of the first 12 matches this year due to injury, at last taking up a role as a regular beginning June 11. Despite playing no more than 45 minutes in any of his seven matches this season, Patino has tallied four goals, and the club is 4-0-0 when he starts.
He also provided the most impressive strike of the night in the 16th minute, receiving a pass from Victor “PC” Giro about 25 yards from the goal and squaring his body to the net before sending a curling, right-footed shot just inside the right post.“Alen has helped me grow a lot as a forward, and he has changed me as a player,” Patino said. “Now when I can shoot, I will shoot. That's one thing maybe I didn’t do before as much, when I was in Orlando City and Mexico.
