SAN JOSE — Archbishop Mitty jumped out to a 13-point lead after one quarter and cruised from there in a 71-57 victory at Bellarmine in a West Catholic Athletic League opener Wednesday.
The Monarchs were coming off their first two losses of the season at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in San Diego. They were without Derek Sangster at that tournament. Sangster, who missed the previous six games with a broken wrist, was back in the lineup Wednesday and raring to go. The 6-foot-7 Princeton commit scored 10 points the first five minutes of the game on a pair of 3-pointers and a fastbreak slam and layup. He finished with a game-high 19 points.
“Anytime you get Derek Sansgter back, he’s such a force,” Mitty coach Tim Kennedy said. “He helps so much on offense but more so on the defense with his length. He’s able to get deflections, blocks and then is able to play downhill. He’s a huge asset for us.”“I put in a lot of work – kind of rehabbed it, iced it, a lot of different treatment – to be back,” he said.
