Local featherweight prospect set to step up in competition with 10-round bout.
Don’t talk to San Antonio featherweight Rick Medina about stealing the spotlight when he takes on fellow undefeated prospect Raymond Ford on June 25 at the Tech Port Arena.“We grew up together, trained together at the same gym,” Medina said. “I’m not surprised at all by the success he’s having. But this is a big opportunity for me, too.”
In that fight, Rodriguez upset the veteran Carlos Cuadras of Mexico in a lopsided unanimous decision in Phoenix. “It’s been exciting to see how far he’s come,” Medina said of Rodriguez. “I’m hoping to follow in his footsteps one day soon.”Ford is a quick, 23-year-old southpaw out of Camden, N.J., who owns a split decision victory over an undefeated prospect in his most recent fight on the Rodriguez-Cuadras card in Phoenix in February.
Medina fought on a Jermall Charlo card a year ago at the Toyota Center in Houston, so he’s not totally unaccustomed to the big stage.
