'Little Women' doesn’t need male moviegoers to be a hit
arguing that men are somehow letting down their female counterparts by not seeing/being afraid to see the Greta Gerwig-directed adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott novel. First, it is far more important that the film make a lot of money versus winning a bunch of Oscars, so if the concern is indeed rooted in whether it earns a seat at the Oscar table, that’s understandable but a separate issue.
Yes, the Saoirse Ronan/Florence Pugh/Emma Watson/Eliza Scanlen/Laura Dern/Timothée Chalamet flick is pretty terrific, both exceptionally well-made and genuinely entertaining . And yes, there is a conversation to be had about why movies about men are automatically considered more prestigious and universal than movies about women. But thus far men are showing up toin decent numbers and, more importantly, the movie shouldn’t live or die based on if dudes show up.
