‘Joker’ dropped below $1 million but topped ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
. Thus far, as sadly predicted, Warner Bros.’ post-summer slate of adult-skewing, comparatively non-IP, diverse and inclusive studio programmers have played to mostly empty auditoriums. They’ve been ignored by the very moviegoers who complain that Hollywood only makes remakes, superhero movies and cartoons about talking animals. Meanwhile, we all showed for their scary movies about the killer clowns.
We’ll see if the Helen Mirren/Ian McKellen thriller performs any better this weekend, and next month brings the wide release of Clint Eastwood’s and the Christmas Day platform release of the Michael B. Jordan/Brie Larson/Jamie Foxx legal dramastands out in today’s Hollywood, it’s still another example of the kind of film that would have struggled to find even 5% of its audience without the specific comic book super villain IP attached to its small-scale drama. Its success amid Warner Bros.
