The Colombia international has made 175 league appearances since joining the Cherries from Levante in a club-record £25million deal in the summer of 2018. The popular 28-year-old played and started in all but one of Bournemouth’s Premier League matches this season - playing more minutes for the club than any other player - and scored five goals.
Those goals underlined his importance to the team, helping to earn points against Aston Villa, Fulham and Leeds United as the Cherries secured their Premier League safety. Lerma has played at centre-back as well as midfield for Bournemouth this season, but has excelled as Gary O’Neil’s enforcer in the centre of the park.
