The Prime Minister hoped that the man he promoted would help him appeal to backbenchers - but Zahawi turned on him instead
of the boss who had just promoted him. In a letter he posted on Twitter, Mr Zahawi wrote: “It will only get worse – for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly of all the country. You must do the right thing and go now.”
The end would almost certainly have been swift in any case: the number of ministerial resignations had grown so large that No 10 had no prospect of filling all the vacancies with the dwindling number of loyalists available on the back benches.
