Boris Johnson is forging ahead with his plans to “get Brexit done” by seeking to make it illegal for Britain to extend Brexit negotiations with the European Union beyond 2020

: U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, energised by an emphatic election win, is forging ahead with his plans to “get Brexit done” by seeking to make it illegal for Britain to extend Brexit negotiations with the European Union beyond 2020.

Lawmakers are due to return the Westminster today to be sworn in following last Thursday’s election, and they will almost immediately begin debating Johnson’s Withdrawal Agreement bill. Britain is due to leave the EU on January 31 and Johnson has a self-imposed 11-month transition period in which to negotiate a new trading deal with the remainder of the bloc. The new deadline is December 31 2020.

Johnson is now seeking to amend the bill to would make it illegal for the U.K. to further extend negotiations with the EU beyond that December cutoff. As it stands, the transition period can be extended for up to two years, but this amendment would cancel that out.on the hopes that Johnson’s large majority offered some certainty on the future of Brexit, today the pound slid as much as 1.3% against the dollar on news of the amendment, before rising back to $1.32. Investors fearful of a cliff-edge scenario reacted to the possibility of a hard Brexit, and concerns that it could take more than a year to negotiate the complex agreements.
