Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, told Johnson not to “scrap or break or in any way change” the protocol, which was signed by the prime minister in 2019.Micheál Martin, the Irish prime minister, condemned the plan, saying it would destabilise the peace process. Alexander De Croo, the prime minister of Belgium, told Johnson: “Don’t touch this.”
