Boeing will temporarily stop producing the 737 MAX next month, the company announced today amid continued uncertainty about when regulators will let the troubled passenger jet return to the skies after two crashes killed 346 people
.
The move is a major setback for Boeing, one of the United States' largest manufacturers, whose future has already been clouded since the U.S. and other countries ordered the plane grounded in March. The Federal Aviation Administration, which originally approved the MAX to fly in 2017, has said it has no set timeline for approving the plane to fly again. But expectations that Boeing might win approval this year have steadily slipped away.
"During this time, it is our plan that affected employees will continue 737-related work, or be temporarily assigned to other teams in Puget Sound," the company said.
