Search crews find the body of an Alabama man who drowned Monday in Smith Lake.
Frankie D. Cruce, 60, drowned in Smith Lake around 1:40 p.m. Monday as he tried to retrieve a canopy that fell from his boat on the lake near Miller’s Flats.
Cruce’s body was found in about 42 feet of water at the main river’s channel edge on Smith Lake, said Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Jeremy Burkett. Several law enforcement agencies aided in the search for Cruce: Daphne Search and Rescue; the Cullman County Dive Team; Crane Hill Fire and Rescue; Logan Fire and Rescue; the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office; Cullman County Fire and Rescue; Haleyville Search and Rescue; Childersburg Search and Rescue; and with troopers from ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division.
