Real estate developers and investors are looking into master-planned communities like Bridges at Preston Crossing and strip retail opportunities with restaurants and offices to increase the city’s growth.Angie Rich, who has lived in Gunter for 23 years, said BNSF and city officials have not been open about the plans. She said she asked for an environmental study and traffic analysis but didn’t receive them.
“I think a lot of citizens are concerned because they have been ignored by our city and by BNSF. They [BNSF] have failed to provide anything,” Rich said. “So many questions are unanswered, and it feels like they’re hiding from us.”that he has heard residents’ concerns but believes BNSF will positively impact the community through tax revenue and job opportunities.
“While we are aware there may be a few residents who have voiced concerns about this upcoming opportunity, both the City of Gunter and BNSF are committed to ensuring the proper oversight of this facility, and we are pleased to see that BNSF has and will continue to be engaged with the community throughout the process of making this logistics center a reality,” Gibson said.
“It’s embarrassing what BNSF gotten away with in the agreement. We’re not an underserved market. We’re disinterested,” Harris said. “We’re going to have to go through the growing pains and we may not see any of the benefits.”Advertisement “There won’t be any sales in Gunter. This is just a waypoint. Things will be picked up and then brought somewhere else,” Harris said.
