New Jersey girls wrestling pioneer attempts to leave her mark in state's record books with a finals win Saturday
Kira Pipkins of Bloomfield smiles after winning the 126 pound semifinal during the NJSIAA Girls Wrestling State Finals at Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, NJ on Sunday, February 26, 2023.Four years a ago, as a freshman 114 pounder, Bloomfield’s Kira Pipkins won her first state championship when she defeated Warren Hills’ Katrina Kling in sudden victory at the Rothman Orthopaedic/NJSIAA Girls State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City.
More than 100 wins later, Pipkins will return to Boardwalk Hall for the first time since that original championship win in search of a record setting fourth state championship. Pipkins already became the first girls wrestler to collect 100 career wins and she now seeks to be the first to make a clean sweep of all four state titles over her high school career.
