A massive fire broke out Tuesday in a Brooklyn warehouse used by the NYPD as a storage facility for confiscated vehicles.

The blaze was first reported around 10:30 a.m. at 700 Columbia Street in Red Hook, according to the FDNY. The property – known as the Erie Basin Auto Pound – is home to an NYPD storage facility where police keep impounded vehicles, electric bikes, and other confiscated items. The address is also used for commercial maritime purposes.
An FDNY spokesperson said the cause of the three-alarm fire was unclear, but confirmed it may have originated on city property. There were no injuries reported at this time. More than 140 firefighters continued to respond to the blaze as of noon on Tuesday. Photos and videos showed plumes of black smoke rising over the warehouse, visible from miles away.This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
