USA TODAYA Washington, D.C., principal has apologized after an assigned group project led to black fifth grade students being told by other students to portray enslaved people and drink from water fountains that were labelled as segregated.

A group of teachers at the school split students into smaller groups, where they were asked to either record a podcast, create a still reenactment, or perform a dramatic reading. One black student was asked to portray an enslaved person, while another was told to drink from a"segregated" water fountain, per the teachers' letter.It 'sickens' school officials:In group discussions after the project, according to the principal's letter, some students expressed discomfort at the roles they were told to play – while others were unsure about how to advocate for students who were uncomfortable.
