'Gameboys' — in all its nuance, romance, and messiness — could be the future of queer storytelling. OpEd
For one, it unapologetically depicts gay characters in all their brazen fullness. And these layered portrayals are bolstered by the intoxicating chemistry between its two leads, Kokoy de Santos as Gavreel and Elijah Canlas as Cairo. They’re two boys who meet while gaming online, and who fall in love in the midst of the pandemic as they navigate friendship conflicts — and an urgent dread that looms as the virus impacts their loved ones.
bursts into “real life,” where the characters are living together in person. In all its nuance, romance, and messiness,The film features moments of pure joy, such as Gavreel and Cairo at the beach without a care in the world, writing their names in the sand. Friends of the main characters, Terrence and Wesley , make peace with their feelings, while the heartbroken Achilles finds inner strength.
Meanwhile, Elijah Canlas finds a more sophisticated Cairo, who stands up for himself and those he loves. Rage flows through him untamed, making for one of the film’s most captivating performances. It’s a credit to the pair that we don’t just believe they are in love, we believe these two characters are meant to be.
Especially noteworthy is Terrence, whose mental health plummeted in lockdown; but he’s supported and nurtured by Gavreel and Cairo in the same way that their love story gave fans something to root for during the pandemic. “I know that what you’re going through is difficult, Gav and I are just here for you,” Cairo says, translated into English. He’s speaking directly to us.
Propelled by a script penned by Ash Malanum, clearly imbued with his affection for the queer community in the Philippines and his reflection of life as a gay man, the writing shines visually in the hands of cinematographer Carlo Mendoza. It never looks down on its audience, right up until the bittersweet end, as Cairo leaves to live with his mother and Gavreel jets off to New York.
