Authorities say a man was shooting at someone else Wednesday morning when gunfire hit an SUV, killing 14-year-old Moriah Quib-Marquez and critically injuring her mother.
Police and witnesses say it appeared Bruce Lanier Austin was standing in the middle of 80th Street North Wednesday firing a long gun when the SUV carrying Moriah Quib-Marquez and her mother, Rosa, passed through and were struck.
Austin is charged with capital murder of a child and shooting into an occupied vehicle. He has been held in the Birmingham City Jail since 9:33 p.m. Wednesday, and now will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond. More than 20 shots were fired, and shell casing littered the street. Three other children and another adult were in the SUV but were not struck.“I woke up to gunfire,’’ Finton said. “My dog was going nuts.”
Mayor Randall Woodfin used social media to address the city’s latest killing. He said via Twitter he had spoken with Moriah’s father.
